New Mortal Kombat Movie Is Koming

Mortal Kombat is still immensely popular over the years, and the original 1995 film really isn't as bad as people might think it is.  Well a new film is on the way hot off the extremely popular web series, Mortal Kombat Legacy..  Kevin Tancharoen, who directed the MK Legacy shorts, will direct the film and he's all ready talking about the brutality he feels the movie needs to have.  “Up to this point, we’ve only been talking ‘rated R,’” says Tancharoen. “I like realistic takes on things, I like it when it’s a little darker and grittier. And I want the martial arts to feel real as opposed to balletic and super-choreographed. It needs to feel brutal, because that’s the nature of the video game itself.”  No word yet as to when this will hit theaters, but you can bet teenage boys drooling for video game violence will show up.

Welcome to TMIAJ's list of what we think are the Top 25 Comic Book To Film Adaptions!  We will reveal ten films today, 10 tomorrow, and the final five on Friday!  This list is put together by the TMIAJ Staff and the criteria is the film had to be adapted from a previous comic book or graphic novel! Today, the Top 5!

#25 - #16
#15 - #6

#5 X2: X-Men United (2003)
Released May 2, 2003
Adapted From The Uncanny X-Men (Marvel Comics)
Starring Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellan, & Anna paquin
Director: Bryan Singer
Domestic Box Office total: $243.9 Million

The X-Men band together to find a mutant assassin who has made an attempt on the President's life, while the Mutant Academy is attacked by military forces.

Why It Made The List: Singer used ideas from the graphic novel God Loves, Man Kills, to craft the best X-Men film in the franchise.  Everything from Wolverine going berserk in the mansion to the climatic battle and sacrifice of Jean Grey at the film's end, add up to an amazing comic book adaption.

#4 Batman Begins (2005)
Released June 5, 2005
Based On Batman (DC Comics)
Starring Christian Bale, Liam Neeson, & Michael Caine
Director: Christopher Nolan
Domestic Box Office Total: $205 Million

Bruce Wayne has watched his home, Gotham City, turn into a crime infested abyss throughout his entire life, so he decides to become the hero Gotham needs- Batman.

Why It Made The List: Batman Begins is the Batman film we had been waiting our whole life for.  It tells the origin with a "realistic" take on the mythology and director Christopher Nolan delivers a vision unlike any seen before.  And to think the sequel would be even better.

#3 Superman  (1978)
Released December 15, 1978
Based On Superman (DC Comics)
Starring Christopher Reeve & Gene Hackman
Director: Richard Donner
Domestic Box Office Total: $134 Million

An alien orphan is sent from his dying planet to Earth, where he grows up to become his adoptive home's first and greatest super-hero

Why It Made The List:  Superman could arguably be the #1 film on any comic book movie list.  In fact all of the Top 3 could be #1.  30 years later Superman still holds strong as an example of how to do a comic book film right, and on top of that, it's a damn good film!

#2 Spider-Man 2 (2004)
Released June 30, 2004
Based On The Amazing Spider-Man (Marvel Comics)
Starring Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, & Alfred Molina
Director: Sam Raimi
Domestic Box Office Total: $373.5 Million

Peter Parker is beset with troubles in his failing personal life as he battles a brilliant scientist named Doctor Otto Octavius, who becomes Doctor Octopus (aka Doc Ock), after an accident causes him to bond psychically with mechanical tentacles that do his bidding.

Why It Made The List: The train battle alone is one of the best in comic book movie history!  A solid plot, fantastic action sequences, and when you watch, you feel like Spider-Man came off the comic books and onto the big screen! Amazing piece of film!

#1 The Dark Knight (2008)
Released July 18, 2008
Based On Batman (DC Comics)
Starring Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, & Michael Caine
Director: Christopher Nolan
Domestic Box Office Total: $533 Million

Batman, Gordon and Harvey Dent are forced to deal with the chaos unleashed by a terrorist mastermind known only as the Joker, as he drives each of them to their limits.

Why It Made The List: The Dark Knight is no doubt the single best comic book film to date.  Some people believe it has it's flaws and perhaps it does, but it draws you in  gives us the best Batman, and best comic book movie ever.  Of course this may only be until The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters.

Thanks for reading and we hope you enjoyed it!

The Holocron: TMIAJ Presents Top 25 Comic Book To Film Adaptions part 2 - #15 Through #6

Today #16 through #6!

#25 - #16

#15 The Crow (1994)
Released May 11, 1994
Adapted From The Crow (Caliber Comics)
Starring Brandon Lee
Director: Alex Proyas
Domestic Box Office Total: $50.6 Million

A man brutally murdered comes back to life as an undead avenger of his and his fiancée's murder.

Why It Made The List: Alex Proyas's film adaption of The Crow is a honest and true to the source version.  It takes a few liberties from the comics but most movies do, then there's the performance from the late Brandon Lee.  Amazing, from his heart, and believable! Hollywood wanting to remake this is a terrible idea, the film stands on it's own.

#14 X-Men First Class (2011)
Released June 3, 2011
Based On The X-Men (Marvel Comics)
Starring James McAvoy & Michael Fassbender
Director: Matthew Vaughn
Domestic Box Office Total: $146 Million

In 1962, the United States government enlists the help of Mutants with superhuman abilities to stop a malicious dictator who is determined to start world war III.

Why It Made The List: Despite it's continuity liberties it takes witht he film, X-Men First Class is the most solid X film next to X-Men 2.  The relationship between Xavier and Magneto is well payed here, and the final battle in the film is epic and x-citing!

#13 Sin City (2005)
Released April 1, 2005
Based On Sin City (Dark Horse Comics)
Starring Bruce Willis, Clive Owen, Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba
Director: Robert Rodriguez & Frank Miller
Domestic Box Office Total: $74 Million

A film that explores the dark and miserable town, Basin City, and tells the story of three different people, all caught up in violent corruption.

Why It Made The List: Out of all the films on the top 25 this may be the absolute most faithful adaption.  Robert Rodriguez used the comics as a guideline for every scene in the film, along with the dialogue and the result is fantastic.

#12 Kick-Ass (2010)
Released April 16, 2010
Based On Kick-Ass (Marvel's Icon Comics)
Starring Aaron Johnson& Nicholas Cage
Director: Matthew Vaughn
Domestic Box Office Total: $48 Million

Dave Lizewski is an unnoticed high school student and comic book fan who one day decides to become a super-hero, even though he has no powers, training or meaningful reason to do so.

Why It Made The List: The film is a brutal hard-core look at what it would be like, in a sense, to try and be a super-hero in real life.  The comics were ultra violent and the movie doesn't stray from that.  In fact, it kicks ass.

#11 Superman II (1981)
Released June 19, 1981
Based On Superman (DC Comics)
Starring Christopher Reeve
Director: Richard Lester & Richard Donner
Domestic Box Office Total: $108 Million

Superman agrees to sacrifice his powers to marry Lois, unaware that three Kryptonian criminals he inadvertently released are conquering Earth.

Why It Made The List: Superman 2 is still one of the best sequels of all time.  The battle in the city at the end of the film is astounding, and 30 years later, we still don't have a Superman film that compares to the original two films.  That has to mean something.

#10 Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
Released July 22, 2011
Based On Captain America (Marvel Comics)
Starring Chris Evans, Tommy Lee Jones, & Hugo Weaving
Director: Joe Johnston
Domestic Box Office Total: $174 Million

After being deemed unfit for military service, Steve Rogers volunteers for a top secret research project that turns him into Captain America, a superhero dedicated to defending America's ideals.

Why It Made The List: It may be the newest film out of the 25 on the list, but it made an immediate impact.  People had seemingly low expectations for the film, but it delivered, and delivered well!  The film is damn good and now we all can't wait for The Avengers!

#9 300 (2007)
Released March 9, 2007
Based On 300 (Dark Horse Comics)
Starring Gerard Butler
Director: Zach Snyder
Domestic Box Office Total: $210 Million

King Leonidas and a force of 300 men fight the Persians at Thermopylae in 480 B.C

Why It Made The List: Along with Sin City, this adaption is also very faithful to the source material.  Snyder gave the film a unique visual style to the film, and over all it just gave it's audience what it wanted to see.  A ass kicking film with a cool story too! It's also still one of the biggest selling Blu-Ray's to date!

#8 Iron Man (2008)
Released May 2, 2008
Based On Iron Man (Marvel Comics)
Starring Robert Downey Jr, Gwyenth Paltrow, & Jeff Bridges
Director: Jon Favreau
Domestic Box Office Total: $318 Million

When wealthy industrialist Tony Stark is forced to build an armored suit after a life-threatening incident, he ultimately decides to use its technology to fight against evil.

Why It Made The List: Marvel had some success with the X-Men and Spider-Man franchises so Iron Man was a new start for them.  If it failed then it could have meant no more Marvel movies, but it didn't.  The film was solid and damn good, and now we are getting an Avengers movie, all because this movie rocked!

#7 Batman (1989)
Released June 23, 1989
Based On Batman (DC Comics)
Starring Michael Keaton & Jack Nicholson
Director: Tim Burton
Domestic Box Office Total: $251 Million

The Dark Knight of Gotham City begins his war on crime with his first major enemy being the clownishly homicidal Joker.

Why It Made The List: Before Christopher Nolan came along, this Batman film was it!  A dark brooding Batman that overlooked Gotham City and battled The joker.  Over 20 years later the film doesn't hold up as well as Superman The Movie does for an older film, but it still helped launch Batman into modern mainstream!

#6 Spider-Man (2002)
Released May 3, 2002
Based On The Amazing Spider-Man (Marvel Comics)
Starring Tobey Maguire, Kristen Dunst & Willem Dafoe
Director: Sam Raimi
Domestic Box Office Total: $403.7 Million

When bitten by a genetically modified spider, a nerdy, shy, and awkward high school student gains spider-like abilities that he eventually must use to fight evil as a superhero after tragedy befalls his family.

Why It Made The List: James Cameron at one time toyed with Spider-Man on the big screen but he never did it.  Perhaps it would have been amazing, but Raimi did an amazing job also, giving a great film, and an even better sequel (but that's later on the list).  Maguire was excellent as Peter Parker, and watching Spidey fly through New York is a comic geek's dream.

The Holocron: TMIAJ Presents TOP 25 Comic Book To FIlm Adaptions Part 1 - #25 Through #16

Let the Top 25 begin.....

#25 Constantine (2005)
Released February 18, 2005
Adapted From Hellblazer (DC Comics)
Starring: Keanu Reeves
Director: Francis Lawrence
Domestic Box Office Total: $75.9 Million

Constantine tells the story of irreverent supernatural detective John Constantine, who has literally been to hell and back.

Why It Made The List:  It's a solid adaption of the comic book series despite what people think of Keanu Reeves.  A sequel had been rumored for a long time but seems to be in limbo hell.

#24 Blade (1998)
Released August 21, 1998
Adapted From Blade The Vampire (Marvel Comics)
Starring Wesley Snipes, Steven Dorff
Director: Steven Norrington
Domestic Box Office Total: $70 Million

A half-vampire, half-mortal man becomes a protector of the mortal race, while slaying evil vampires.

Why It Made The List: The film was made when Snipes was a huge bankable star, and solid action mixed with a cool vampire story made for a great comic book adaption.  It also showed an R rated superhero could be done and make money at the box office.

#23 Thor (2011)
Released May 6, 2011
Adapted From The Mighty Thor (Marvel Comics)
Starring Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins, & Natalie Portman
Director: Kenneth Branagh
Domestic Box Office Total: $181 Million

The powerful but arrogant warrior Thor is cast out of the fantastic realm of Asgard and sent to live amongst humans on Earth, where he soon becomes one of their finest defenders.

Why It Made The List: Well because it's a damn enjoyable film.  A bit hokey in parts yes, but the action scenes were fantastic, and it made for a solid and satisfying story leading into Thor joining The Avengers in next summer's blockbuster film.  It maybe could have place higher and maybe one day it will!

#22 X-Men (2000)
Released July 14, 2000
Adapted From The Uncanny X-Men (Marvel Comics)
Starring Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, & Halle Berry
Director: Bryan Singer
Domestic Box Office Total:  #157 Million

Two mutants come to a private academy for their kind whose resident superhero team must oppose a terrorist organization with similar powers.

Why It Made The List: The team super hero film was something that Hollywood was afraid to do.  Director Bryan Singer showed it could be done and done well with a solid adaption of the mutant super heroes.  Without X-Men's success, we may not be getting an Avengers movie.

#21 Watchmen (2009)
Released March 6, 2009
Adapted From The Watchmen (DC COmics)
Starring Jackie Earle Haley and Billy Crudup
Director: Zach Snyder
Domestic Box Office Total: $107 Million

In an alternate 1985 where former superheroes exist, the murder of a colleague sends active vigilante Rorschach into his own sprawling investigation, uncovering something that could completely change the course of history as we know it.

Why It Made The List:  This is a tough book to adapt.  Zach Snyder pulls it off pretty well though with a solid adaption.  A lot of fans had some gripes with it but really it's a pretty decent film adaption and the director's cut is even better.  This is one people will revisit over the years we think and realize how good it is.

 #20 V For Vendetta (2006)
Released March 17, 2006
Adapted From V For Vendetta (DC Comics)
Starring Natalie Portman & Hugo Weaving
Director: Andy & Larry Wachowski
Domestic Box Office Total: $70.5 Million

A shadowy freedom fighter known only as "V" uses terrorist tactics to fight against his totalitarian society. Upon rescuing a girl from the secret police, he also finds his best chance at having an ally.

Why It Made The List:  It adapts the book almost perfectly and is shot with a nice visual style that the Wachowski brothers bring to it.  It's safe to say that it's a better film than their Matrix films, even the original Matrix.

#19 Green Lantern (2011)
Released June 17, 2011
Adapted From Green Lantern (DC Comics)
Starring Ryan Reynolds
Director: Martin Campbell
Domestic Box Office Total: $116.4 Million

A test pilot is granted a mystical green ring that bestows him with otherworldly powers, as well as membership into an intergalactic squadron tasked with keeping peace within the universe.

Why It Made The List:  All though Green Lantern wasn't well received with critics we think it's very good.  Could it have been better?  Absolutely but it captures the essence of Green Lantern and the film works on more levels than it doesn't work.  Bring ont he sequel.

#18 Scott Pilgrim Vs The World (2010)
Released August 13, 2010
Adapted From Scott Pilgrim Vs The World
Starring Michael Cera
Director: Edgar Wright
Domestic Box Office Total: $31.5 Million

Scott Pilgrim must defeat his new girlfriend's seven evil exes in order to win her heart.

Why It Made The List: Out of all the movies on the list this one might be the most fun.  The flick is a total blast and on top of that, it's really good!  The poster doesn't lie, it truly is epic in the greatest sense and Michael Cera delivers as Scott Pilgrim.

#17 Hellboy (2004)
Released April 2, 2004
Adapted From Hellboy (Dark Horse Comics)
Starring Ron Perlman & Selma Blair
Director: Guillmero del Torro
Domestic Box Office Total: $59.6 Million

A demon, raised from infancy after being conjured by and rescued from the Nazis, grows up to become a defender against the forces of darkness.

Why It Made The List: Hellboy features great set design, special effects, a solid story adaption, and believe it or not, a lot of charm for a story about a guy from hell.

#16 The Incredible Hulk (2008)
Released June 13, 2008
Adapted From The Incredible Hulk (Marvel Comics)
Starring Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, Tim Roth, & William Hurt
Director: Louis Leterrier
Domestic Box Office Total: $134.8 Million

Dr. Bruce Banner, thanks to a gamma ray experiment gone wrong, transforms into a giant green-skinned hulk whenever his pulse rate gets too high. Meanwhile, a soldier uses the same technology to become an evil version of the original.

Why It Made The List: This is the hulk movie we were waiting for.  It's brutal.  It's got solid story.  The Hulk kicks ass! And it leads into The Avengers next summer!

#15 to #6 Tomorrow!
